Where to buy copper pipe cheapest in the UK

· 5 min read

Copper pipe is one of those things every plumber and half the country's DIYers buy on repeat — and one of the easiest to overpay for. The price for the exact same length of 15mm tube can swing by a wide margin between merchants, on the same day, for no reason you'd ever guess from the shelf.

Here's the honest answer to "where's cheapest", plus how to actually work it out for your job rather than guessing.

Why copper pipe prices swing so much

Three things move the number you pay:

  • The copper market. Copper is a traded commodity. When the metal price moves, merchant pricing follows — which is why a figure you saw three months ago is already wrong.
  • Length and pack. A 3-metre length, a 2-metre, a 10-pack, a 25-metre coil of microbore — all priced differently, and easy to compare by accident. Make sure you're pricing the same format.
  • Who's selling it. A trade counter, a DIY shed and an online plumbing specialist all price the identical pipe to different customers with different overheads. None is reliably cheapest.

Trade counter vs DIY shed vs online specialist

Rough rules of thumb, from what we see across UK merchants:

  • Online plumbing specialists often win on small-to-medium quantities. Lean overheads, sharp everyday pricing, no account needed.
  • Trade counters can win on bulk, or if you've got a negotiated account rate — but the "trade price" isn't automatically the lowest, and it's worth checking rather than assuming.
  • DIY sheds are convenient and often fine for a couple of lengths, but rarely the cheapest per metre.

The catch: which one wins flips depending on how much you're buying and where you are. That's exactly why "just go to the merchant" leaves money on the table.

The delivery trap

This is the one that catches people. Copper pipe is long, heavy and awkward to ship, so delivery charges can be steep. A pipe that's cheapest on the shelf can become the dearest once postage is added — while a slightly pricier one ships free or sits at a branch two miles away.

Always compare the delivered total for your quantity, or factor in a collection. Unit price alone is a trap.

Compare like for like

One genuine pitfall: "15mm copper pipe" isn't a single product. You'll find different lengths, different grades (standard vs table X for heavier-duty runs), single lengths vs multipacks, and the odd unrelated fitting that just happens to share the words. Comparing a single 2m length against a 10-pack and calling it a "saving" is the classic mistake.

Decide your exact format first — size, length, grade, quantity — then compare only that.
